“We are now able to offer UK growers a new and improved growing media mix from Hawita, the Latvian based peat producer” says Peter Wessel, Horticultural Sales Director at LS Systems Ltd.
The new mix is 65% 0-5mm block peat and 35% 0-15mm dark peat. This provides a mix with a richer texture, holding more moisture, and also an improved structure. The increased dark percentage peat provides more water holding capacity with a reduction to 65% of younger peat. It’s content has been changed to block peat from milled peat. The blocks, cut out like large bricks, protect peat structure.
“You can now choose whatever grade you prefer, thus giving mixes a much better structure with block peat” said Peter Wessel.
Home growers have traditionally used older and darker UK peat compared to younger darker Baltic peats.
“We designed the Hawita mix ourselves and customers can now do the same” says Peter. He and his colleagues visited Latvia this June and with the help from Stefan Arlinghaus at Hawita, the new percentage mix was designed and produced.
